Living Learning Communities Fall 2012

LLC
Clarion University is excited to announce the introduction of Living Learning Communities (LLC) in the fall of 2012. These communities will allow students with common interests or majors to connect with each other, with faculty, and with university resources. An LLC is designed to engage a group of students in multiple activities, including coursework and co-curricular activities. Ideally, students will enroll in one or more courses that are linked around a common theme and tap into the expertise of faculty and staff who are invested in and involved with the learning process. Students admitted early to the university have the greatest chance of getting the LLC of their choice.

The following LLCs:

  • are designed for freshmen (unless otherwise noted)
  • will be available in fall 2012
  • will most likely be housed at Reinhard Villages (unless otherwise noted).

ALL BUSINESS

All Business will be comprised of declared business students who will have the opportunity to visit local/regional businesses to get a better sense of the business enterprise. Experiential learning opportunities will complement the academic curriculum.  For more information, contact David Hartley, dhartley@clarion.edu, 814-393-2600 (phone) or 814-682-6221 (text).

DISABILITY STUDIES

Disability Studies is for students who are interested in special education and rehabilitative sciences or a related area, such as communication sciences and disorders, psychology or sociology. Faculty from these disciplines will mentor these students, who will have the opportunity to plan activities and service projects for two organizations, Rehabilitative Sciences Club and the Student Council for Exceptional Children. For more information, contact Rick Sabousky, sabousky@clarion.edu, 814-393-2325.

DISCOVER CLARION

The Discover Clarion community is for freshmen who are undecided about what to study. Group members will explore the various majors and minors offered at Clarion University, while learning the necessary skills to succeed at college. Programming will include "Meet Your Major" nights, in-hall advising, study-skill strategies, tutoring, review sessions, events to showcase student organizations, and community trips to cultural events. For more information, contact Chris Hearst (hearst@clarion.edu, 393-2249), Joseph Croskey (jcroskey@clarion.edu, 393-1878) or Erin Schuetz (eschuetz@clarion.edu, 393-1769).

FINE ART AND ART HISTORY

Fine Art and Art History is for students pursuing a major or minor in fine art, as well as music and theater majors. These students will have the opportunity to take art classes with peers who have similar interests and pursuits. Having a core group of individuals with whom to share experiences will help these students gain the confidence to make artwork in the public space that is the classroom. Field trip opportunities will broaden the student's learning experiences. For more information, contact Kaersten Colvin-Woodruff (kcolvin@clarion.edu, 814-393-2382) or Cathie Joslyn (cjoslyn@clarion.edu, 814-393-2470).

KNOWING ONESELF, KNOWING OTHERS

Knowing Oneself, Knowing Others is for the many students - not just those who study psychology and social sciences - who are interested in understanding themselves and others. PSY 111: Psychology of Personal Growth, a general education course, will be a suggested course for community residents. Co-curricular activities will occur twice per month, and will include volunteer opportunities in the community and movie nights. For more information, contact Jeanne Slattery (jslattery@clarion.edu, 814-393-2254) or Marité Rodriguez Haynes (mhaynes@clarion.edu, 814-393-1992).

LEADERSHIP & LAW

Leadership & Law is for students of any major, but is geared specifically for self-identified, pre-law students who wish to attend law school after graduating from Clarion. These students will have access to specific co-curricular activities, including practice LSAT examinations, LSAT tutoring and tailored academic advising and mentoring by faculty. Community members will also have the opportunity to serve in leadership positions in campus organizations. For more information, contact Jamie Phillips (jphillips@clarion.edu, 814-393-2391) or Barry Sweet (bsweet@clarion.edu, 814-393-2205).

LIBRARY SCIENCE

Library Science is for students who are planning to major in library science at Clarion. This community will allow these students to form connections and relationships with peers to complement their academic coursework. This learning environment will allow students - who often have common interests and goals - to create an environment that fosters these values. For more information, contact Carrie Gardner (cgardner@clarion.edu, 814-393-2469) or Jessica Modrzejewski (jmodrzejewsk@clarion.edu, 814-393-1836).

MEDICAL IMAGING SCIENCES (Clarion University--Venango Campus)

What sets the Medical Imaging and Allied Health Living Learning Community apart from other on-campus living experiences?  It is the special co-curricular programs designed for students with a common major. Members of this LLC will have the chance to be a part of a community of peers, faculty and staff who share their academic interests. Community members can form study groups, share interests and explore common academic aspirations to enhance the academic program and provide enriching experiences not normally found in the traditional classroom and residence hall environment. Some of the experiences will include:

  • Opportunities to attend academically related conferences, workshops and technology demonstrations.
  • Site visits to health care facilities that provide a wide variety of medical imaging and allied health career possibilities.
  • Job shadowing and academic mentorship opportunities.
  • Meetings with current and former students to learn the best strategies for success in the clinical site application process.
  • Faculty-led study groups in the student apartment complex.
  • Access to academic resources to assist students with your science-related and other course work

Students interested in this LLC must completed a special application in addition to the regular housing application. Students who apply to and are accepted into this LLC agree to be active participants in the community and work collectively to support the goals of each individual as well as the community as a whole.
