Policy for Student Teaching as a Post Baccalaureate Student Adding Another Teaching Certification

Purpose: To provide a coordinated approach and effective preparation to determine the post baccalaureate student?s readiness for the required Pennsylvania Teacher Certification student teaching field experience.
Policy: In the case of a student holding a baccalaureate degree with teacher certification(s) who enters the College of Education and Human Services for the purpose of completing requirements necessary for an additional Pennsylvania teacher certification, the student?s transcript and any related credentials must be reviewed. This review will determine what additional coursework may be required and successfully completed prior to the beginning of the student teaching field experience. The student teaching experience will be based upon an experience from 3 to 6 credits in length. The hours required will follow this chart:

Procedure:
1. The student will meet with the department chair to determine what additional coursework is needed prior to the student teaching experience.
2. The department chair will identify the student?s advisor.
3. The department chair, with the approval of the College Dean, will determine if any intervention study coursework is required.
4. The department chair or designee will develop a written contract to be signed by the student.
5. When all requirements in the signed contract are successfully completed, the student may then move into the student teaching experience.
6. The student teaching experience will be determined by the Director of Field services and approved by the Department Chair and the College Dean.
6a) If the student is employed as a teacher, the experience may be completed through part-time student teaching assignments with a certified teacher with approval of the student?s employer.
6b) If the student is not employed as a teacher, the experience may be completed through a more concentrated full-time experience.
