ProQuest Direct

After you enter ProQuest, you can search multiple databases.  Select all that apply and click the continue button.

 

Enter the terms you wish to search in the box under the words, "Search by Word."  Enter a search term such as Performing Arts or Choreography.

To perform a subject search, click on Search by World - Advanced, select "subject" as the field to search, and enter the search term Performing Arts or Choreography

Web Sites

To find WEB SITES with information about theatre topics, open a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox and choose a search engine such as Google.  At the search screen, type in the topic you wish to research. When using the Internet for research, use the most specific search term possible.  Some sites to visit about theatre topics include:

 

BackStage

This weekly trade publication offers daily news stories and information for actors on topics such as schools, taxes, auditions, health, voice, resumes, etc.

Broadway.com
Includes Broadway news, up-to-the-minute reviews, archives, The Insider column, multimedia clips, profiles of the stars of the moment, sound clips from cast albums, ticketing, forums and chat rooms.

Broadway 101 (History of the Great White Way)

What you will find here is the history of The Great White Way, sectioned off by decades.  The first installment tells the history of Broadway and the theatre prior to 1900.  Then, the period of 1900 to 1910 begins.  You can read about any decade individually or you can start at the beginning.  Also features a photo gallery which traces the history of the street called Broadway.  Photos and prints dating from 1650 to 1905 can be viewed, and many of them have not been seen for years.

The Internet Theater Magazine of Reviews, Features, Annotated Listings.  Reviews of plays in New York, London, Berkshires, etc.--three theatrical quote pages, major playwright backgrounders, updated daily.

Provides good information on Michael Chekhov - one of the best kept acting secrets.

Internet Broadway Database

IBDB archive is the official database for Broadway theatre information.  Internet Broadway Database provides records of productions from the beginnings of New York theatre until today.  Details include pertinent people involved as well as interesting facts and production statistics.  Get a list of every production of Hamlet on Broadway or a list of your favorite actor's credits.  Find out what played at a particular theatre or what shows opened in a specified Broadway season.  The pride of IBDB is its accuracy and comprehensiveness.  The value of IBDB is its searchability.  Enter a keyword into the basic search fields on the left to search in Shows, People, Theatres or Seasons categories.  Advanced searches can also be performed.

Library of Congress:  American Memory Collection and Topics

The link will take you to "American Memory Collections."  Includes photos from the Federal Theatre Project, the variety stage, celebrities - or search by keyword.  Rich collection, well worth browsing.

Mr. William Shakespeare and the Internet

The foremost gateway to Shakespeare on the Internet.  The sitemap reveals paths to e-texts of the plays, criticism, biographical and historical information, original source material, pop culture uses of Shakespeare, and more.  Also includes:  Shakespeare Timeline, A Shakespeare Genealogy, Charles and Mary Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare, and Prefatory materials from the First Folio.

Musicals 101.com

A former Broadway professional and devoted fan has assembled year-by-year stage chronologies from 1930 to the present, and an index of screen musicals for the same period.  Also features a history of musicals, bios of musical stars, a musicals calendar, and a photo gallery.

nytheatre.com and The New York Experience

Offers news, features, reviews, show listings and summaries, ticket information and discounts, a good late-night theatre guide, and a "starfile" linking well-known actors with their current shows.

New York Theatre Exchange

This is the official website of The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards.  Categories include Nominees & Awards, News & Events, Tony Archives, Play Your Part, About the Tonys, and the Tonys Store.  Also features the story behind each of the 22 Tony categories, the Tony Diaries, and Antoinette Perry Remembered.

Playbill On-Line

This site has news articles about plays, actors, and groups.  There are listings of theatre shows by region, and a search engine to find additional theatre performances.  Users can also purchase tickets on-line.

American affiliate of the great London bookshop.  Samuel French seeks out the world's best plays and makes them available to the widest range of producing groups.  You may download the Basic Catalogue and 2004 Supplement in Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The International Centre for Women Playwrights

The main mission of this organization is to support women playwrights around the world by bringing international attention to their achievements; encouraging production of their plays, translation, publication, and international distributions of their works; providing means for communication and contact among the sister community of the world's women dramatists; assisting them in developing the tools of their craft, in determining their own artistic forms, and in setting their own critical standards; encouraging scholarly and critical examination and study of the history and the contemporary work and concerns of women playwrights; and supporting their efforts to gain professional equality, and to express their own personal, artistic, social, and political vision without censorship, harassment, or personal danger.
