Clarion University Scholarships

The following information illustrates the many scholarship opportunities available to students at Clarion University.  Throughout the past year, endowed scholarships, annual scholarships, and athletic scholarships provided support to more than 700 students.  Most of Clarion's scholarships are funded by way of private support thorough the Clarion University Foundation, and are managed by the Office of Scholarship Adminstration, within the Enrollment Management area of the university.  For more information please call 814-393-2306 if you are unclear about any of the information below.

Field-Brock-Coburn Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Edward L. Mattil for the purpose of honoring Blanche Field Brock, Class of 1957 and her daughter, Earla Brock Coburn, Class of 1949. A gift by Mrs. Coburn honoring three generations of Clarion graduates - Mrs. Brock, herself and her daughter, Kathryn Coburn Peer, Class of 1978 completed the endowment. All three had wonderful educational experiences and careers. The scholarship fund is intended for promising students studying Library Science who demonstrate financial need. To be automatically considered, candidates should be accepted at Clarion University as an incoming Library Science major. Candidates must demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA. Preference will be given to incoming freshmen resident or commuting students attending the Clarion Campus.

S.P.I.R.I.T. Scholarship

The Students Producing Innovative Recognition for Incoming Students of Tomorrow (SPIRIT) Scholarship Endowment was initiated in 2009 by the social fraternities and sororities (GREEKS). As part of their service mission and in an effort to instill a culture of philanthropy by giving back to the university, the Greeks have taken a leadership role in challenging all campus student groups to participate. The purpose of this endowment is to provide scholarships for Clarion University students who have displayed leadership through community philanthropy. To be considered, student must be an incoming freshman with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale in high school, and must display leadership through community philanthropy. Such activities and service will be identified through the student's admissions application. Be sure to note the activities on the paper application or if applying online a separate sheet. It is recommended that the incoming student provide one letter of recommendation on the service that they provided in their community from an organization contact.

Dr. Lisbeth J. Brown Academic Achievement Award

This scholarship was established in the name of Lisbeth Brown, professor in Clarion University's College of Education, to assist current students who are achieving excellence in their Education Department college major. To be considered, student must have a minimum Q.P.A. of 3.5grade point average at Clarion University. Contact the chair of the Education Department Scholarship Committee each January to find out more about application process and deadline date to be considered.

Lorraine I. Johnson Mathematics Scholarship Endowment

Lorraine I. Johnson Mathematics Scholarship Endowment: This scholarship was created by Ms. Lorraine Johnson, Clarion Class of 1933, in honor of two of her mentors, Dr. J.W.F. Wilkinson and Mr. C. Fred Becker. Both educators had a great deal of influence as a part of her education at Clarion. Dr. Wilkinson served Clarion from 1898 until retirement in 1935. For 31 years, he served as Dean of the Mathematics department and was acting Principal of the Clarion State Normal School in 1926 and again in 1928. Mr. Becker served Clarion for 24 years until his retirement in 1948. He taught a wide variety of courses in professional education, and in addition, was for many years the Director of the Office of Student Teaching & Placement. To be considered for the scholarship, candidate must be full time student enrolled in the major area of mathematics or secondary education mathematics. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate financial need via the current FAFSA form, and demonstrate academic success by achieving a minimum high school grade point average of a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The scholarship can be renewable for the incoming freshman winner based on quality work at the college level. Students will be automatically considered for the scholarship by the Office of Scholarship Administration. FAFSA should be on file by March 1.

Bonnie Silvertongue Memorial Marketing Scholarship

This endowed scholarship established by the faculty, staff, friends, and former students in memory of Bonnie Silvertongue, who passed away from cancer while teaching at the Department of Marketing. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding business major planning for a career in the field of marketing. Selection criteria include academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and service to the Clarion University community. Retail Management Scholarship

This endowed scholarship established by the Marketing Department to fund awards for marketing students. The award is made to a student planning a career in retail management. Additional information can be obtained from the Department of Marketing chair at 814-393-2628.

Marketing Research Scholarship

As part of class projects, teams of marketing research students entered the Arresdust Research Project Competition in 1988 and 1989. The Clarion University teams, coordinated by faculty advisor Dr. Paul Kim, won first prize two years in a row. An endowed scholarship was established to honor the recipients of the awards and to preserve the department's heritage of excellence in marketing research. The scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding marketing major who plans a career in marketing research. Contact the Department of Marketing chair, at 814-393-2628 for additional information.

This endowed scholarship established through contributions from alumni, friends and faculty of Clarion's Marketing Department. The award is made to a student planning a career in marketing management. Additional information can be obtained from the Department of Marketing chair at 814-393-2628.

Paul Y. Kim Advertising Management Scholarship

This endowed scholarship established by Dr. Paul Y. Kim professor and former chair of the Marketing Department. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding marketing major who plans for a career in the field of advertising management. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and service to the department. Gray Real Estate Scholarship

This endowed fund will provide scholarships for high achieving students majoring in real estate or finance. Students must be of sophomore standing or higher and have completed six credits in real estate. Students must have a 3.0 or above cumulative QPA. Additional information can be obtained from the chair of the Finance Department at (814) 226-2626.

Burns and Burns Scholarship

This endowed scholarship is available to students majoring in finance, real estate, and insurance. Nominees are required to submit a resume and are evaluated on academic achievement and contributions to the department, the College of Business Administration, Clarion University, and the local community. H. G. Burns Center for Finance and Insurance Scholarship

The Burns Center awards scholarships to incoming students interested in a career in insurance, finance, or real estate. To be considered, candidates must have a minimum SAT score of 1100, be in the top 40% of their class, and have demonstrated effective extracurricular participation. Recipients can continue to receive the scholarships throughout their four years provided that they maintain a QPA of 3.25. Student records are reviewed for this award via their admission materials; no scholarship application is required. Enid Dennis Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, honoring Dr. Enid Dennis, former professor of economics, is available to junior and senior economics majors. The purpose of the award is to reward academic accomplishments and provide incentives to students in the field of economics. Dr. Leonard & Sally Ann Ackerman Scholarship

Established by Sally Ann Ackerman. To be considered the criteria includes a declared management or industrial relations major. Awards are available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The student should have completed at least 30 credits at Clarion University. Minimum overall QPA of 3.25 is required in all Clarion courses and in Clarion business courses. The Ruth N. Pici Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in May 2004 by Mr. Frank A. Pici, Clarion Class of 1977, in honor of his mother, Ruth.  Ruth was a strong advocate of higher education.  Like many parents of Clarion students, she did not attend college.  However, recognizing the value of higher education and the practical value of an accounting background, she worked hard to provide the environment and resources for her son and her other children to better themselves with college educations.  Each year, the scholarship will be awarded to a freshman accounting major from Southwestern Pennsylvania , with preference given to graduates of the East Allegheny , Elizabeth Forward, McKeesport , and Gateway School Districts in Allegheny County .  To be considered, student must also rank in the upper 40% of high school class and have a SAT score of 1000 (combined critical reading & mathematics component) or higher.  Awarded each spring.

Charles P. Leach, Sr. Scholarship

This endowed scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding business student. Eligible students must be of at least sophomore standing and are selected on the basis of academic record, contribution to the College of Business Administration and the university, and participation in extracurricular activities such as professional organizations. Application is made to the chair of the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee during the Spring Semester.  Questions should be directed to 814-393-2600.

The Kroh Family Business Scholarship

Established by D. Scott Kroh, Class of 1974, and his wife, Pamela, to benefit a student in the College of Business Administration at Clarion University. The scholarship is intended for upper division students who maintain a strong academic performance in preparation for a successful career in a field of business. Award is based on financial need. Application is made to the chair of the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee during the Spring Semester. Questions should be directed to 814-393-2600.

E. Wilson Amsler Endowed Scholarship

An endowed scholarship established in recognition of E. Wilson Amsler and his many contributions to the community and the university. The scholarship will permit the College of Business Administration to recruit and/or support an outstanding business major. Application is made to the chair of the College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee at 814-393-2600 during the Spring Semester.

Debate Team – Scholarship Opportunities

Clarion’s Debate Team is proud to be able to provide scholarship opportunities for members of the team. Scholarships are available for both returning and incoming students. Awards are based on debate success and take academic and need-based factors into account. Dr. Mary R. Hardwick SCT Scholarship

This scholarship established to honor Dr. Mary Hardwick, former professor in the SCT department, a gifted artist and dedicated educator. Students majoring in SCT are eligible for consideration for this award. Please contact SCT department chair at 814-393-2284.

Frank H. Sessions Scholarship

This scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Frank H. Sessions, former dean of graduate studies and continuing education. The funds are awarded each year in recruiting learning disabled or handicapped students. Student needs a 3.0 or above cumulative g.p.a. Contact Disability Support Services at 814-393-2095 for application information. Deadline date for application is April 1.

Class of 1959 Scholarship:

This scholarship, specific to incoming freshman education majors, was established by the Clarion University Class of 1959.  Many of those classmates went on to become distinguished educators and desire to encourage students entering the same profession.  The scholarship perpetuates the long-term commitment of the class members to their Alma Mater and present day students in appreciation of their education and the opportunities it provided.  To be considered, eligible candidates must have a minimum SAT of 1000 or above in the mathematics and critical reading components, or an ACT composite score of 22; be a prospective education major, and be in the top 40% of their high school class.  Preference will be given to a descendant of a Clarion University alumnus, and if the prospective student is a descendent, he/she needs to notify Sue McMillen in the Admissions Office in writing by February 1 so the student can be automatically considered along with other children of Clarion alumni.

Out of State Tuition Reduction Policy


First Time in College Students
1000 SAT (21 ACT) and 3.0 high school qpa (or top 30%) of their class. Requires a 2.75 qpa each year the student is enrolled to retain the award. Review of grades takes place at the conclusion of the spring semester.

Transfer Students
Same criteria, however students would need at least a 2.75 qpa from their transferring university.

This policy is not retroactive for currently enrolled students.

Harold William Ferguson Science Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Jeffrey & Mrs. Janet Ferguson in honor of Jeffrey's father, Harold William Ferguson, Clarion Class of 1947 with bachelor's degree certifications to teach the physical sciences, social studies, and mathematics. Harold met his wife Jean (Blake) at Clarion and along with their four children all with doctoral degrees, have a strong belief in education and passion for learning. In addition to being a United States Army Air Corp veteran, Harold spent

31 years teaching and especially loved teaching Chemistry. It is the intent of this scholarship to assist students interested in the physical sciences, (mathematics, chemistry, physics) who wish to teach upon graduation. Incoming freshman automatically considered with preference for a first generation student, a physical science secondary education major with financial need as determined by FAFSA. If you are a first generation college student in one of these majors, please alert Sue McMillen in the Admissions Office by April 10.

Educational Opportunities Program/ACT 101 Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded each spring. Freshman, sophomore or junior students involved with Act 101 program who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership qualities, and commitment to the Act 101/Educational Opportunities Program may apply.  Candidates must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Clarion University Alumni Association (CUAA) Legacy Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Clarion University Alumni Association 2008-2009 Board of Directors to show their commitment to their alma mater, fellow alumni, and present day students.  They believe offering this scholarship to descendents of Clarion University alumni will ensure the Clarion legacy will continue from generation to generation.  To be considered for this scholarship, a candidate must be an incoming freshman and a descendent of a Clarion University Alumnus (parent, grandparent, or step-parent), with a minimum grade point average of a 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, plus a minimum SAT score of 1000 (combined critical reading and mathematics component) or ACT composite score of 22.  Extracurricular activities and community service may also be considered.  Students who feel they meet the academic criteria need to submit a letter indicating they are a descendent of an alumnus with name and graduation year of the alumnus to the scholarship administrator in the Admissions Office, Clarion University.  Award offered in March by the Office of Scholarship Administration for the following school year. Distribution of the award will occur over two semesters, with half of the award being applied in the Fall semester, and the other half of the award being applied in the Spring semester.

Lori Ann Aaron Memorial Scholarship

Lori Ann (Bessetti) Aaron graduated from Clarion Limestone School District in 1993. She was a gifted student and pursued her higher education at Clarion University. She received her bachelor's degree in finance in 1996 and completed her MBA in 2001. This scholarship was established by Lori's husband, Mark Aaron, their families, and friends. To be eligible for consideration, a student must be an incoming freshman with a minimum 3.0 grade point average in a high school college preparatory curriculum, and must demonstrate financial need determined by FAFSA. First preference shall be granted to students from Clarion Limestone School District. Second preference shall be granted to students at all other Clarion County schools. Students will be automatically considered via their admissions credential.

Accountancy Department Endowed Scholarship

Annually, two scholarship awards by the Accountancy Department's Endowment Fund Committee. Criteria used in selecting current students as recipients include senior standing, academic record, classroom performance, and participation in university activities.
