Clarion University was well represented at the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference in Pittsburgh
Dr. Elaine Carbone, professor of mathematics, and senior secondary mathematics education majors, Chelsey Grabigel, Jessica Inman, Jodi Rogers, Chad Buerk and Amanda Slagle presented a technology session at the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Conference in Pittsburgh on November. These senior mathematics education majors and their professor represented Clarion University at the conference as they taught practicing teachers from throughout Pennsylvania a new technology for their middle school classrooms.
The group conducted a TI-73 graphing calculator workshop entitled "Are You A Square?" where participants learned how to incorporate the Texas Instrument middle school graphing calculators in their middle school classes. Participants measured their height and arm span in centimeters, and according to their measurements were then classified as squares if their height and arm span measured the same, tall rectangles if their height was greater than their arm span, and far reaching rectangles if their height was less than their arm span.
Grabigel showed the workshop participants the uniqueness of the TI-73 calculator by teaching them how to create qualitative graphs such as a circle graph, a bar graph and a pictograph. Carbone then used the height data and arm span of the group to determine if there was a correlation between the participants' height and arm span.
The activity led to a discussion of other examples of correlation in other data sets that they presented. The participants were particularly interested in the 1992 Dream Team basketball statistics while Inman, Rogers, Buerk and Slagle individually assisted workshop participants. Texas Instruments Pennsylvania representative Doyt Jones provided the calculators for the workshop.
Carbone and the senior mathematics education teacher candidates also participated in additional sessions at the conference. Other senior mathematics education teacher candidates who attended the conference included Denise Langer and Justin Carter.
