Clarion University's German Club will observe the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in Level A of Carlson Library. Speakers and films will be a part of the program.

The observance is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Dr. Eleanor ter Horst, professor of modern languages at Clarion University, will speak on the topic, "Looking Backward, Moving On:  Germany 20 Years After the Fall." Two German Club students will detail the history of the Berlin Wall from its inception to its dismantling.

Two films will be shown depicting the events leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall and how young people in Berlin experienced the reunified city.

At the height of the Cold War, construction began on The Berlin Wall in 1961. It was a desperate - and effective - move by the German Democratic Republic to stop East Berliners escaping from the Soviet-controlled East German state into the West of the city, which was then occupied by the Americans, British and French. It stood as a barrier until Nov. 9, 1989, when the crumbling communist regime opened the gates reuniting the divided city.

Clarion University is the high-achieving, nationally recognized, comprehensive university that delivers a personal and challenging academic experience.
