Clarion reaches goal of $1,000 at Dig Pink match

Article Body

The Clarion University women's volleyball team reached its goal of raising $1,000 at its Dig Pink match Friday vs. Mercyhurst.

The money will be donated to the Side-Out Foundation for use in the foundation's attempts to find a cure and raise awareness for breast cancer.

"Raising that amount of money is fantastic," Clarion head coach Jennifer Harrison said. "The great thing was we were able to raise that money by selling t-shirts and taking donations. Nearly half the money came from straight donations.

"The generosity of our fans and supporters was incredible. But, then again, their support of our program this year has been great. We've had a large following and the players really appreciate that. Our fans help make a difference. It's a great atmosphere, and I've even had visiting coaches comment on how nice our crowds are."

Clarion beat Mercyhurst 3-2 Friday behind 17 kills from Nicole Andrusz, 16 kills from Kellie Bartman, 40 set assists from Amanda Gough and 29 digs from Rhianon Brady. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 23-6 overall and 13-2 in the PSAC. Clarion, which was ranked sixth in its region in NCAA Division II at the last poll two weeks ago, can secure a PSAC Playoff bid with a win over IUP Friday.

NOTES - Clarion has two more regular-season home matches left. The Golden Eagles will entertain Edinboro at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 and Gannon at 1 p.m. Nov. 7 ... Clarion is now 7-2 at home this season.
