            Dr. Rose Elaine Carbone, professor of mathematics at Clarion University, attended and presented at the 10th International Conference in Mathematics Education :  Models in Developing Mathematics Education in Dresden, Germany, from Sept. 11-17.

            Carbone presented international research findings that she has conducted with international colleagues from South Africa and Northern Ireland regarding prospective elementary teachers' understanding of rational numbers. Her paper, Elementary Teacher Candidates' Understanding of Rational Numbers:  An International Perspective, was published in the conference proceedings.

            Immediately after the presentation, a mathematics educator, Dr. Hessa Al Binali at Qatar University expressed interest in joining the research project.  Carbone and Al Binali are communicating regarding data collection. Dr. Issic Leung, a mathematics professor from Hong Kong has also contributed data for the study.

            Besides presenting, Carbone attended numerous sessions and learned many new ideas from international mathematics educators from South Africa, Slovenia, Germany, Iran, Northern Ireland, Australia, Great Britain, Canada, and Denmark  as well as mathematics educators from the United States. She also was involved in numerous individual discussions regarding cultural differences in teaching mathematics with mathematics educators from several different countries. Forty-four countries were represented at the conference.
