The Water Engine/Mr. Happiness
November 18 - 22, 2009

Mamet's brilliant play works on several levels. The audience is watching the actors, announcer and sound effects man present a radio play in the 1930s with unerring authenticity. The play itself is about a young inventor who's found a way to run an engine on distilled water. He's ridiculed by crooked lawyers who attempt to buy the invention from him on behalf of certain business interests. Will his singular determination triumph over those who think only of their profits and can Mr. Happiness solve all of your problems?

This broadway musical follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village. AIDS and both its physical and emotional complications pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom, and Angel; Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble; Benjamin has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends; and Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general, always behind the camera recording the events but never playing a part.

Anton in Show Business
April 21 - 25, 2010

This madcap comedy follows three actresses across the footlights, down the rabbit hole and into a strangely familiar Wonderland that looks a lot like American theatre the resemblance is uncanny! As these women pursue their dream of performing Chekhov in Texas, they're whisked through a maelstrom of "good ideas" that offer unique solutions to the Three Sister's need to have life's deeper purpose revealed. In the tradition of great backstage comedies, Anton in Show Business conveys the joys, pains and absurdities of "putting on a play" at the turn of the century.
