Autumn Kunselman
Anna Welsh
Amber Alsop
Two Clarion University graduates and a current student will be competing for the title of Miss Pennsylvania 2009 during the Miss Pennsylvania Scholarship Pageant scheduled June 21-27 at the Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh. The pageant winner moves on to the Miss America Pageant.
Recent graduates Autumn Kunselman, Miss Jewel of the West, and Anna Welsh, Miss MidState, and current sophomore Amber Alsop, Miss Moraine State, all have qualified for the state competition through a local pageant. Coincidentally, all three are members of Delta Phi Epsilon Sorority at Clarion University.
Kunselman graduated in May 2007 with a degree in music/elective studies in business. She is a daughter of Charles and Rebecca Kunselman of Punxsutawney and is a graduate of Punxsutawney High School. She reached the Miss Pennsylvania Pageant through the Miss Jewel of the West pageant held in Kittanning. Her platform is “Noteworthy: Music Programs in Public School Systems”; and she sings “At Last” in the talent competition.
Welsh graduated in May 2009 with a degree in political science and a minor in pre-law/history. She has been accepted to law school at Florida Coastal University. She is a daughter of Cathy Bowser of Brookville and is a graduate of Brookville High School. She reached the Miss Pennsylvania Pageant through the Miss MidState pageant held in Hershey. Her platform is “You Have a Voice: Engaging in Democracy”; and she sings “The Climb” in the talent competition.
Alsop, a sophomore psychology major, is a daughter of Ed Rhoades of Venus and is a graduate of Keystone High School. She reached the Miss Pennsylvania Pageant through the Miss Moraine State pageant held in Butler. Her platform is “Alcoholism and Its Effect on Families;” and she performs “Courage of the Wind” on piano in the talent competition.
Contestants in the Miss America Pageant earn scholarship money at each level of the competition. Miss American 2010 will be crowned Jan. 30, 2010, in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. This assistance is not just for the handful of young women who become Miss America, but is available to the over 12,000 young women who compete in the state and local competitions as well.
Clarion University is the high-achieving, nationally recognized, comprehensive university that delivers a personal and challenging academic experience.
