Clarion University was recognized as one of two “Universities of the Year” at the American Red Cross Greater Alleghenies Region’s annual meeting. Individuals, businesses and organizations from 22 counties throughout the 100-county American Red Cross Blood Services, Greater Alleghenies Region, were honored at the event.
The theme “Sixty Super Years of Saving Lives” highlighted and celebrated the work of individuals, schools, businesses and civic groups who volunteer their time to benefit their communities and hospital patients. The region will observe the 60th anniversary of its founding on June 15.
Each year, Clarion University’s fraternities and sororities sponsor five to six blood drives on-campus. Shawn Hoke, interim director of campus life, has served as the site-coordinator at Clarion since 2003 and accepted the award.
“I am happy to accept this award on behalf of Clarion University’s fraternity and sorority community,” said Hoke. “It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of countless student volunteers over the past six years. I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank the students, faculty and staff at Clarion University for their willingness to give of themselves and donate blood. We also need to recognize Chartwells and Pepsi for their steadfast sponsorship of our canteen.”
Clarion utilizes eDonor to schedule appointments and their drives attract an additional 30-40 walk-ins per drive. This past year, Clarion collected 422 units blood, which had the potential to impact 1,266 lives. The first of Clarion’s five blood drives for the 2009-10 academic year is currently scheduled for Sept. 9.
Clarion University is the high-achieving, nationally recognized, comprehensive university that delivers a personal and challenging academic experience.
